About Arabic Language
The Arabic language is a Semitic southern- central language. It is spoken in some parts of the middle east, the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa. The Arabic language is written with the Arabic alphabet. It is written from right to left. It has many dialects such as Modern Standard Arabic, Gulf Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, Levantine Arabic, Maghrebi Arabic, and many others. Literary Arabic is known as Classical Arabic it is uniform worldwide. The total number of all varieties of Arabic language native and non-native speakers are approximately 422 million in the Arab world. It is the fifth most spoken language worldwide.
Why Arabic Language Translation?
Arabic is the official languages of around 22 countries in the world. Arabic is the official language of Bahrain, Algeria, Djibouti, Egypt, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, UAE, Kuwait, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Libya, Lebanon, Mauritania, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, and some other countries as well. Therefore, the foremost benefit of Arabic translations is the access to the user or consumer base of all of these countries, and therefore, which refers to an access to a prospect base, which is as large as a whopping 300 million! Besides, the Arab world is a rapidly growing part of the world. With investments across the globe, resulting in large infrastructural prosperity, the Arab world is certainly a hotspot for business in the years to come.
Challenges in Arabic Language Translation
The challenge with Arab sentence structuring is that even though an Arab translator translates text into Arab with finesse, if it doesn’t sound natural or native, all the hard work could go down the drain! Therefore, the requirement is that of perfect translations, but sounding natural, native and flawless. This would help connect with the Arab consumer base in a better way. For instance, a sentence in English – I need a pen when translated in formal or standard Arabic would be Aihtaj Qalam! Now, that’s the standard version though, and there’s a difference in sentence structure as well. For a native Arabic speaker in Sudan, it could be ana dayir al qalam, which means I want the pen! So, here there’s a difference, and that is something that should be known to an Arabic translator.
The Purpose of Usage – Differences in the Spoken Language
One challenge with Arabic translations is that formal Arabic or the written version of the language is completely different from its spoken counterpart. Hence, before taking up Arabic translations, the Arabic translator must figure out the purpose of translation. For instance, if it is for a report, a book, or an article or any other document, the translation would require a formal or the Standard Modern Arabic (SMA). On the other hand, for a colloquial document such as an advertisement, the approach and language form would be completely different.
Arabic is the principal language, however, over the years, all the Arabic speaking countries have developed their own version of the language, which is derived from Classical Arabic, but completely different in its own right. This is unlike other languages, wherein the dialects are different, however, which could be understood by people who speak it. This is a difficulty faced by the native Arabs as well. For instance, two people from different Arab speaking countries would have difficulties comprehending the Arabic spoken, and therefore a challenge in understanding each other. Now, an expert Arabic translator, although an expert in one dialect of the language, perhaps, would not possess equivalent expertise with the other. This, therefore, demands a team of Arab language experts that are either fluent with multiple dialects, or a resource for each one of them.
Genders aren’t used in English, but they are in Arabic. For instance, in English, objects are addressed with it, this or that. However, in Arabic, everything is preceded by a gender identifier, even objects like pens, tables, etc. based on the context. This is one concern with Arabic translators who are native English speakers. Not understanding or completely aware of the use of genders in Arabic could make the translation look alien, or could even repel the reader.
Arabic, unlike any other language in the world, starts from the left. So, when the translator translates something into Arabic, he must be aware that meaning does not change, the story remains unaltered. An Arabic translator, instead, must be aware of these minute complexities involved and know what is supposed to be translated, and what must be kept as is.
