Finnish Translation & Language Services
Finnish is one of the two official languages of Finland, the other one being Swedish. Finnish is spoken by around 5-6 million people worldwide, out of which most of them stay in Finland. However, looking at the geographical expanse of Finnish, it is spread considerably across the entire globe, including countries like Norway, Russia, Sweden, Canada, Brazil, the United States, and Estonia.
Over the years, Finnish has developed several dialects. Finnish dialects are broadly classified into Eastern and Western dialects. These dialects are categorized based on the regions wherein they are spoken. Within these categories, there are several other categories including southeastern, southwestern, and northwestern. Again, these subtypes too include several other dialects, based on the Finnish regions that they are spoken and understood in.

Finnish Economy and the Scope of Finnish Translations
Over 70% of the Finnish economy is service-based. The rest is covered by manufacturing and refining. Some of the largest industries in the Finnish economy are electronics, machinery, vehicles, and other engineering products. Besides, Finland is a resource-rich country, with a lot of mineral as well as freshwater resources.
Finland is a steadily growing economy. The top foreign investors investing in Finland are Sweden, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, and Germany, and predominantly, investments are pumped into the manufacturing sector, information, and communication, real estate, insurance and finance, along with the retail industry.
Finland scores relatively high than a lot of other countries when it comes to foreign investments. These points include political stability, higher expenditures on research and development, multilingual and diverse population, and considerable expertise in areas such as manufacturing, healthcare, green technology, and the ICT sector. Finland is one of the most competitive economies in the world.
Now, in view of the country’s economic competence, investment potential, the number of Finnish speakers, and the countries/ regions that speak Finnish, Finnish translations offer considerable scope for investors or business owners aspiring to expand their business in the Finnish speaking regions. Although the number of Finnish speakers isn’t too high, as the country’s economy is steadily growing, and also as it holds trade ties with the neighboring countries, investors could have several business opportunities in Finland in the years to come. The scope for Finnish translations, if executed well, and if done through expert and certified Finnish translators, could certainly help penetrate the interiors of the Finnish speaking markets.
Finnish Translation Challenges
Finnish is a European language. Now, having said so, it is quite natural for anyone to relate it with the other neighboring languages such as Swedish, Danish, or others. Nevertheless, that’s not the case. While Swedish, Norwegian and Danish belong to the Indo-European language group, Finnish belongs to an entirely different group of languages, which is Uralic, and in which, Finnish belongs to Finno-Ugric branch. So, translators dealing with Finnish translations must be in cognizance of this basic difference. Let us now look at some of the other grammatical differences involved in Finnish and English.
1. Absence of a Progressive Verb Form
The Finnish language doesn’t have a progressive verb. So, for instance, a sentence, I was eating when they came, in Finnish, would be written as I ate when they came. Now, this may not be grammatically correct in English, but in Finnish it is. Finnish utilizes the tenses to convey similar meanings, as in the case of the corresponding ones in English. In Finnish, the present tense is used to talk about the future tense. For example, I inform him when I meet him. In contrast to English, wherein the sentence would be written as I will inform when I meet him, Finnish doesn’t use ‘will’ over here, and straight away talks about the future tense the way it would about the present tense.
2. Word Order
Finnish, like many other languages in the world, and most importantly, English, follows the same subject-verb-object order. Nevertheless, it allows flexibility and isn’t dependent on the position of an element to express the meaning, as in the case of English. Now, this could be a major challenge for someone who’s a beginner with an English influence, and also not seasoned enough to be able to construct sentences that are devoid of these limitations. So, in a nutshell, if the translator limits himself to the order of the words, the translation, perhaps, wouldn’t turn as natively effective.
3. Absence of Similar Words
Finnish and English have got the same alphabets, however, the words, since both these languages belong to different families, are different. Of course, Finnish has got a lot of words that have been borrowed from English. However, when transformed into Finnish, the words turned out to be considerably different. For instance, the word bus in Finnish would be spelled as bussi. So, a Finnish translator must be careful about these aspects to ensure that Finnish translation is correct, and relevant in the context of the regional Finnish that it is translated in.
